Siskiyou County

Siskiyou County is ranked 5th in area among California counties, with some 6,347 square miles, but we are only ranked 44th in population among California’s 58 counties with about 45,000 folks.

History and Activities:

1851, Gold discovered in Yreka, the county seat.

Mid 1880’s construction of the Central Pacific Railroad (now Southern Pacific), which lead to the first wave of tourists.

Early 1940’s, State of Jefferson movement (still active), wants to create a new state from several counties of northern CA and several counties in OR

Siskiyou County

Some basic repeat info first…Siskiyou County is located at the far northern end of California.  We are the REAL Northern California.  We fight for our status of being THE Real NORTHERN CALIFORNIA!!!  Siskiyou County has about 40,000 people give or take a thousand or two.  About 50,000, probably more,  Black Cows call Siskiyou County home and a Million Deer enjoy brunch on my freshly planted pansies. More on that later.  If you need a auto body job, this is the county for you.  If you are a resident of this county, you will meet a Black Cow on a country road.  The darn cows are always black, never a white cow on the road, or even a brown and white cow….always black cows and always VERY LARGE BLACK COWS.  AND they are always on the road at night…

So picture this, you are driving on the well-maintained county road doing the posted speed limit and the next thing you know you have a black cow on your hood.  BAM!!! Radiator is spouting steam, poor cow is dead, you fumble for your cell phone to call 911.  The California Highway Patrol shows up, obtains all of the pertinent info from you: Name, Address, Drivers License, Insurance Info and then you tell ‘em you were only going 55 mph.  Cop rolls his eyes ’cause he knows the law.  If you hit a cow in this county, YOU are going to fast.  You see this is an “Open Range” County.  You hit a cow, you are going to fast.  AND, get this: YOU owe the rancher for the price of the cow!!!! AND YOU DO NOT GET TO KEEP THE BEEF!!! “What do you mean?  I just paid you for that dead cow, the beef is mine”.  Not gonna happen….

Now, lets talk about Bambi….and her 999,999 relatives that call Siskiyou County home.  If you live in this county, you will meet a deer.  It is not an if, it is WHEN you hit a deer.  “Oh, those cute, beautiful, adorable deer” you might say.  I hate ‘em…lol.  Every year they come in and have brunch on my pansies…and petunia’s!  So you might say, don’t plant those flowers.  Well, I learned my lesson, I am not planting them this year.  Last year I planted just a few of them, just for color, you know the annuals have the absolute best colors. Well, as there wasn’t enough of those pretty flowers to go around, the deer got upset and yanked up all the Snap Dragons, and just plain spit them out! I spent every morning during the summer replanting the snaps and cussing the deer out!

So, picture this, you are driving down the very well-maintained county road IN BROAD DAYLIGHT and….well you get the picture.  The Deer in Siskiyou County fall out of the sky! They don’t walk across the road, they FALL OUT OF THE SKY.  How else do they get hit?  If you saw them crossing the road, you could react!!!  Unless there is a human injury, half the time the cops don’t even show up.  I don’t know the exact statistics, but I would hazard a guess that at least five deer are hit every day in this county.  That is why the Auto Body Repair Shops do very well in this county.

• Where if you don’t wave at the oncoming car, you are thought to be a tourist…

• Where a traffic jam is three cars at the stop light (about 12 of them in the ENTIRE County)…

• Where you can sit on your back deck and watch the wildlife have a snack or two…

• Where if you don’t like the weather, wait five minutes…

Siskiyou County: Simply The Most Beautiful Place in California…in my humble opinion…

“What is she talking about?  There is only 50 states.”  How about a little history on the 51st State….

Years ago, in 1941 to be exact, for two short months, several top dogs of this area started a secession movement to become a separate state.  The movement garnered national attention and a news bit was set to air on December 8, 1941.  But, we all know what happened on December 7th, 1941. Pearl Harbor happened and everyone’s focus turned to the war in progress.

The State of Jefferson was to include seven Southern Oregon Counties and the Northern Counties of Del Norte, Humboldt, Mendocino, Glenn, Butte, Plumas, Tehema, Trinity, Modoc, Shasta and Siskiyou Counties.  In the months to come, other eXpert, eXp Realty Realtors® will focus on their respective counties.

Today in Siskiyou County, remnants of the 51st State movement is still evident. Located about 6 miles South of Yreka, on Interstate 5, you will see the “State of Jefferson” Barn, many locals have bumper stickers referring to the State of Jefferson. Heck, even the Welcome to California Center, in Anderson has posters of the State of Jefferson!!!

Beautiful Siskiyou County, where if you don’t like the weather, wait five minutes!!!
